How to determine the directions?

To begin the process of confirming directions, it's essential first to understand the orientation of your home and identify which direction each area corresponds to when viewed from your residence.

In Feng Shui, there are eight essential directions to consider: East, West, South, North, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. The boundaries between these eight directional areas are called "directional lines."

Let's go ahead and draw the directional lines in practice!

Purchase an accurate map (refer to "Choosing a Map") and use a ruler and protractor to draw directional lines following the instructions for drawing the directional lines (mentioned above) with your home (represented by ●) as the center.

For regional maps at a scale of around 1:50,000, the top of the map often represents the north. In that case, align the lines with the top and bottom of the map.

When drawing lines on a national map, start by aligning the north-south lines (↑ in the diagram) with the existing north-south lines on the map. Then, use this as a reference to measure the angles and draw the other lines accordingly.

Points to note:

Points to note when drawing directional lines: In most cases, standard national maps are based on the "Lambert Conformal Conic Projection," where the north-south lines are straight, but the east-west lines are curved. When using this type of map, it's essential to establish the initial reference point with the north-south lines, as using the east-west lines as the initial reference can often lead to inaccuracies in direction.
